STAM, the Ghent city museum, is located on the “De Bijloke” site, in a listed convent that was completely renovated for this project. The challenge for the lighting designers was to highlight the architecture of this major historic site, while meeting the expectations of the museum's lighting and scenography.
We had to work carefully, space by space, to come up with the best types of lighting to discreetly enhance the most characteristic architectural features, integrate the luminaires perfectly, meet the needs of circulation and guidance and highlight the works of art according to the required lighting levels.
We have done a great deal of work to research and define the best luminaire and its best position for each case, and we have worked with a very wide range of manufacturers and luminaires to meet our objectives. Many of the luminaires were adapted or even made to measure to fit in with the cornices and the many pieces of furniture and display units designed by the scenographers.
